Drive & Ferry
Nothing captures the spirit of the San Juan Islands like riding an iconic ferry across Pacific Northwest waters. Vehicle reservations are released at 7 am local time, two months, two weeks, and two days prior to your desired sailing. 30% of the boat’s capacity is also reserved for standby vehicles. (But we recommend reserving in advance whenever possible. Round-trip cost is approx $70
Small Airplane Flight
The most direct way to get to The Orcas Hotel is to fly. From SeaTac Airport you take a quick Uber or Shuttle ride to Boeing Field or Lake Union. From there you can take either a wheeled plane or float plane operated by Kenmore Air, or a private charter flight on Point 2 Point Air. Both companies are highly recommended and the scenic flight over the San Juan Islands is breathtaking. Costs range from $150-$250 per person each way.
Shuttle to Ferry
The Bellair Shuttle runs frequent daily busses from SeaTac and the Burlington Amtrak station to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. Once you get to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal you can always walk on any boat without a reservation. ($15 per person) You can also take a water taxi from downtown Anacortes to Orcas Landing. (apx $50 per person)
Rent a Car
There may not be the big name rental car companies you are used to, but Orcas Island is home to two locally owned car rental companies who stock a number of practical island vehicles. There is also a small inventory of TURO cars on the island. (this is a peer to peer car sharing app that offers a modern and convenient way to rent). While having a car on the island isn’t critical, it does enable you to fully experience the island at your own pace.
Rent an E-Bike
If you are a serious cyclist you might consider renting a classic bike to explore the island. For those of us who are less athletically inclined, a moped or e-bike is a fun and exciting way to get around. From The Orcas Hotel to Eastsound takes 30-40 minutes on an e-bike. There are two great companies to choose from. Orcas Bikes offers e-bikes and mopeds as well as some tours. Wildlife Cycles is a long established, full service shop that offers bikes and e-bikes, including mountain bikes that are perfect for exploring the island trails. (please keep in mind that roads have narrow shoulders and are not suited for inexperienced riders.)
