Climb Mount Constitution on Orcas Island This Fall

There’s no shortage of things to do on Orcas Island this fall, but if you happen to be planning a fall getaway to these beautiful islands in Washington State, hiking to Mount Constitution should be at the top of your list. As the highest point in the San Juan Islands, Mount Constitution on Orcas Island offers jaw-dropping views that stretch from the Salish Sea to Mount Baker and the Cascade Mountains. And though it may seem impossible, the Mount Constitution hike is even more breathtaking during autumn, when the forest comes alive with changing colors and crisp air.

With multiple routes through Moran State Park, including both challenging climbs and gentler switchbacks, it’s one of the most rewarding hiking trails in Washington. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a great spot to take in the fall scenery, this is one of the “must-dos” of fall in the San Juans. Of course, hiking isn’t the only way to enjoy a fall escape in this part of the Pacific Northwest. Orcas Island trails offer everything from forested loops to lakeside walks, and there’s plenty of opportunity for kayaking, whale watching, or simply relaxing by the water with a warm drink in hand.

Fall getaways in Washington State don’t get much better than this. The only thing that can make it better is adding a touch of local history and charming character to your getaway. Located right at the ferry landing, our Orcas Island Hotel is your ideal home base for adventure and relaxation. This historic hotel has been welcoming travelers since 1904, with thoughtfully designed rooms, friendly hospitality, and one of the most convenient locations on the island. Whether you’re grabbing a meal from the all-day cafĂ© or enjoying the view from the wraparound porch, the atmosphere here is casual, welcoming, and just what you need after a day on the trails. Fall Hike on Mount Constitution

If you’re planning to hike Mount Constitution, you’ll be spending the day in Moran State Park, one of the most scenic and beloved parks in the San Juan Islands. Located on the eastern side of Orcas Island, this 5,000-acre park is filled with towering forests, alpine lakes, and more than 30 miles of hiking trails that wind through a variety of landscapes. Whether you want to break a sweat on the way up to panoramic views at the top of Mount Constitution or take a peaceful walk around the lake, Moran offers trails for every kind of adventure.

The Mount Constitution hike is the park’s crown jewel. At 2,409 feet, it’s the highest point in the San Juan Islands, and the view from the top is one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. You’ll see Mount Baker, the Cascade Range, and countless islands stretching out into the distance. There are a few ways to reach the summit of Mount Constitution. The most challenging route is the Mt. Constitution Loop, which is 6.7 miles long, gaining an elevation of around 1,500 feet. It begins at Mountain Lake and climbs through thick forest, offering some of the best hiking in the San Juan Islands. You can also bike or drive to the top on the roads and enjoy short walks and views from the summit.

Regardless of how you get to the top of Mount Constitution, once you’re there, don’t miss the chance to climb the stone observation tower. The 53-foot-tall tower, which was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, is a replica of Russian Watchtowers of the age. From there, you’ll take in a 360-degree panoramic view of the San Juan Island archipelago and the mainland Cascade mountain range. It’s a great place to rest and take in the views before heading back down.

Beyond the summit, Moran State Park has plenty to keep you busy on a fall day. Cascade Lake is perfect for an easy loop hike, a picnic by the water, or spotting autumn color reflected in the glassy surface. Mountain Lake offers a more remote feel and is a great spot for a longer loop trail. If you’re into biking, the park also features several multi-use trails open to mountain bikes. You can even get out on both lakes for a bit of kayaking or paddleboarding. Rentals are available seasonally at Cascade Lake, but you can bring your own watercraft year-round.

Fall is also an ideal time for spotting wildlife from atop Mount Constitution, and throughout park areas, something you’ll enjoy with fewer crowds and a quieter atmosphere. You might see bald eagles, deer, or even river otters if you’re lucky. With so many Orcas Island trails to choose from, Moran makes it easy to plan a day outdoors. If you want to take a fantastic lunch option with you, don’t forget to place a to-go order at the Orcas Cafe before your adventures – and we’ll be waiting for you for a great dinner and sunset when you return!
